Dr. Vincent J. Buono, Retired Drexel Hill Dentist Vincent J. Buono of Drexel Hill worked as a dentist for 44 years, having served four generations of patients’ families. He was loved and trusted by many, and the children would stop in on their way home from school just to see him and to say “hello”. His love of dentistry came to him at the age of twelve. He worked tirelessly to try and please everyone and he could converse with his patients on almost any subject. They found him to be a true and knowledgeable friend. He was a graduate of Upper Darby High School, attended St. Joseph’s College, and graduated Temple University School of Dentistry. He opened his first office in Overbrook, and in 1954 he moved to his new home and office in Drexel Hill. Immediately following graduation he served in the army during World War 2. He was Post Dental Surgeon at Fort Screvens, Georgia. Landing in France only days after the invasion. He was Captain with the 61st Combat Engineers participating in major campaigns under General Patton in France, Belgium and Germany, including the Battle of the Bulge. Dr. Buono received many commendations: 5 Battle Stars, 2 Silver Stars, and the Victory Medal for his service as a Dental Officer and much of the time as Medical Officer as well. Working exhausting long hours under stress and handicap of combat conditions, he rendered the highest possible service to the men of his battalion. He was honorably discharged as a Major. He also served on the Upper Darby Draft Board during the Vietnam War. He was a member of the Frederick James Honor Society of Clinical Oral Pathology, a member and president of the John R. Kollmer Internal Medicine Society, and a life member of the American Dental Association, Pennsylvania Dental Association, Philadelphia County Dental Society, Chester-Delaware County Dental Society, American Endodontic Society, and a Fellow of the Academy of General Dentistry. He served as a President of the Medical Alumni of St. Joseph’s College, and Treasurer of the Medical- Dental Bureau of Delaware County. He also held the position of the Dental Examiner for the Philadelphia Board of Education and the Upper Darby School District. He traveled throughout most of Europe and the U.S., Canada, Mexico, the Middle East, and the Far East. He was a man of many hobbies and interests. As if all this were not enough, he was a Charter member of the Ave Maria Council of the Knights of Columbus and served on the Board of Directors, and the 4th Degree member of the Cardinal Dougherty General Assembly, Director of the Upper Darby Rotary Club, President of the Upper Darby Forum, having been awarded “The Man of the Year” award in 1973, Charter member of the Community Y of Upper Darby, former member of Toastmasters of Delaware County, Treasurer of the Friends of the Upper Darby Township Public Library, President of the Philadelphia Cactus and Succulent Society, and a choir member of St. Andrew’s Roman Catholic Church. He is survived by his wife, Philomena (DiSanto) of 62 years, son, Vincent J. Buono, Jr. (Virginia), and two granddaughters, Leigh-Anne McCabe (Gerard) and Rebecca Slomeana (Brian), and five great grandchildren: Maria, Julianne, Sean, Kevin, and Olivia. A Mass of Christian burial will be celebrated March 30, 2011 at 11:00 A.M. at St. Andrew’s Church, 3500 School Lane, Drexel Hill, PA 19026. Interment at St. Denis Cemetery, Havertown.
