Sister Jean Burns RSM

Please pray for the repose of the soul of Sister Jean Burns RSM, age 93, a member of the Institute of the Sisters of Mercy of the Americas, who died peacefully on Friday, April 28, 2023 at McAuley Convent.

Sister Jean’s years in education began in elementary school and quickly moved to high school where she taught Religion and Math at several high schools in the archdiocese of Philadelphia and in Walsingham Academy in Williamsburg, Virginia.

For several years, Sister Jean was Vice Principal of Merion Mercy Academy. She then moved to Gwynedd Mercy College where she served as registrar for the college and later faculty member and chair of the Humanities Department. In her later years, Jean served in various ministries at Walsingham Academy and St. Bede Parish in Williamsburg, Virginia.

Jean made connections wherever she went. She loved being with people and her sisters in community. She enjoyed playing cards and had a table outside her room at McAuley Convent where she welcomed others to join her in a game of cards. She enjoyed “gathering” others and learning about them as they played cards.

She had a keen sense of humor, a kind and patient nature, and a love of the seashore.
