Michael Joseph Vogel, 94, of Broomall, passed away peacefully surrounded by his children and grandchildren early the morning of January 2, 2023, eager to be reunited with the love of his life Elaine. Mickey, as he was known to those he loved, was born in Philadelphia on September 1, 1928 to the late Michael and Mary Vogel. He was the youngest child with seven sisters and one brother.
Mickey loved a good time and his laugh was infectious. It was sometimes hard to get a word in edgewise around his wife Elaine, but when he did it was always to tell an unforgettable story or perfect one liner. A student at Roman Catholic, altar boy at the Church of the Gesu, and resident of the Brewerytown neighborhood of Philadelphia for many years, he loved his city. He had an encyclopedic knowledge of all things Philadelphia. He worked tirelessly for his family as an employee of the Philadelphia Inquirer for 40 years, and continued to read that paper every day of his life. During his time with the Inquirer, he was a brilliant negotiator as head of the Pressmen’s Union. Mickey was devoted to his faith and his service with the Knights of Columbus. He was dedicated to serving the poor and frequently spearheaded food drives for the Knights.
He was the beloved Pop Pop to his 11 grandchildren, all of whom he cherished, and he told them so constantly. Everyone who knew him loved him, and he brought joy into every room he entered. He was quick to bring up any historical event or your favorite sports team or ask for a powdered doughnut – Tasty Cake only, a Philly boy through and through.
Michael is survived by his children Michael and wife Joann, Gregory and wife Diane, Donna and husband John, Geralyn and husband Tim; his grandchildren Gregory (Kendra), Tara (Dan), Katie (Bryan), Laura (Logan), Natalie (David), David (Megan), Leighann (Dan), Victoria (Ryan), John, Alaina (Josh), and Tim; and great grandchildren Jake, Grant, Olivia, Shane, Piper, Callum, Sloane, Taylor, Harper, Reid, Jonah, and Michael.
A visitation will be held from 9:30 am to 11:00 am, on Friday, January 13, 2023, at St. Pius X Church, 220 Lawrence Rd, Broomall, PA 19008. A Mass of Christian Burial will follow at 11:00 am. Inurnment will be held at a later date. In Lieu of flowers the family asks for donations be sent St. Pius X Church.
