Over the years she also worked as a nursing assistant, medical unit clerk, and department store bookkeeper. She loved animals, gardening, and quiet, peaceful time at home. She was a big-time Laverne and Shirley fan and chocoholic. She also loved to sing and had a song for any and every lesson in life, which she’d perform on the fly, often mid-conversation, without warning. She was also an avid reader and country music lover. The Help, The Kitchen House, and Uncle Tom’s Cabin were among her favorite books, and she loved John Denver and all the great Oldies. An introvert and dreamer, Mary liked alone time, one-on-one quality time with her family, and was a true little kid at heart. One of her favorite evening rituals in the final year of her life was eating ice cream and potato chips while watching Laverne and Shirley reruns, which she could almost recite word-for-word. She was very particular, complex, and in short, a woman who knew her own mind. She was Southwest Philly raised, but had Kentucky roots, and trueto the Southern charm in her blood, would seldom let visitors leave the house without sending them home with food or gifts of some kind. Her husband, son, and granddaughter will always remember her as the caring, considerate, quirky woman that ran the King household. Even homebound on bedrest, she was always the one in charge, and everyone knew it.
