Beloved husband of Layne McHugh (nee Lahrman) since 1995; loving father of M. Kevin McHugh (Chris), Kathleen Spotts (Doug), and Kerry Roughgarden (Fred); brother of Molly O’Grady (late Jack), Elaine Sharer and the late Brian McHugh (Joan) and Sheila Shannon (late Fran); stepfather of Charlotte, Lawrence and Jana Carroll.Manus was born December 1, 1935 in Philadelphia. He attended Waldron Academy, St. Joseph’s Prep, graduated from St. Joseph’s University (1958) with a BS in Industrial Science and from Villanova University (1963) with a Masters in History and Political Science. He was a stellar athlete and a member of an All-American Track & Cross Country team at St. Joseph University. So special was his time in the track program, he remained friends with his teammates his entire life. After college, Manus entered the Air Force where he served as an Operations officer in the Strategic Air Command helping to implement one of the first major computer systems in the US.Manus was an executive, consultant and innovator in the Specialty Gas industry. He started his professional life at Olin Mathieson Chemical Corp. In 1965, he joined Air Products and Chemical, Inc. as General Manager of Operations. He continued on with UGI Corp. where he managed a joint venture between UGI and Nippon Sanso, called Ansutech, and was elected to its Board of Directors. Later during his tenure at UGI Corp, he became President of Matheson Gas Products. He ultimately started his own business, called Tertius, Inc., which offered management consulting services. Manus was also very proud to have filed a patent in his name in 1998.Manus was loved by many and touch many hearts through his variety of interests. He was an avid, talented golfer and was a member of Aronimink Golf Club since 1963. Singing also was near and dear to him. He was a long-time member of the St. Norbert’s choir and spent many nights singing with Layne and friends at Aronimink’s piano bar. He cherished his Irish heritage and frequented Ireland, collecting photos, books, maps, and music. In his retired years, Manus picked up oil painting and created scenic works of art for friends and family.Manus was kind, generous and very devoted to friends and family. He had a strong spirit and intellect and was never shy about engaging in a good debate or discussion. Amidst all this was an underlying sense of humor. He loved a good joke and particularly enjoyed pulling a prank or two, reveling in his recounting of these stories! Manus was a blessing to us all in many ways. He will be greatly missed.
