MACNEALJoseph Sr., age 81, of Drexel Hill, PA, passed away on November 1, 2020.Survived by his beloved wife of 50 years, Kathryn MacNeal (nee Atkins); his loving son Joseph MacNeal, Jr. (Jane); his cherished grandchildren, Graham and Molly; and his dear brother Brian MacNeal (Edwina). Also known as Moe to many, Joe served for four years in the U.S. Air Force before learning and mastering the carpentry trade and starting his own carpenter contractor business. In the Air Force, he learned math and accounting skills which served him well in his business life. As a carpenter contractor, he took pride in his hands-on approach to the work (always working along-side his “men”), high-quality craftsmanship in the work of his company, and ensuring the well-being of his employees and their families. Once the starting quarterback at Overbrook High School, Joe had been active in youth sports for much of his later-life. He was the past president of the Llanerch Hills Baseball Association as well as head coach and business sponsor of many teams. Joe spent many evenings and weekends of the past three decades devoted to St. Dorothy youth athletics as coach, most notably as the long-time St. Dorothy JV football head coach. More interested in instilling character in the youth he coached than racking up wins, he nonetheless coached his JV football teams to multiple winning seasons, including an undefeated season in 2016. He coached until recently – when he literally could not stand on the field anymore, with back pain after a lifetime of construction work and impact of other health conditions. A private service will be held, followed by a graveside service at St. Denis Cemetery in Havertown, PA at 2:30 pm on November 6, 2020. The graveside service is open to all to pay respects at the cemetery. Joe will be buried near his much-beloved mother, Marie. Cemetery directions: 2401 St Denis Ln, Havertown, PA 19083; across from the church, cemetery Section 4: http://saintdenis.org/wp-content/uploads/2016/10/Cemetery-Map-.pdf (cemetery map) Donations may be made in Joe’s memory to the St. Dorothy School Athletic Association https://saintdorothy.org/make-a-donation-annual-fund The family strongly encourages all who knew Joe to leave their fond memories of him in the online guest book below. These memories will be collected and presented to Joe’s surviving wife to serve as an enduring reminder of the positive impact he had on so many lives.
