Phelan,Esq. “Al” was an accomplished attorney but first and foremost he was a beloved husband and Pop-Pop who was gifted with a keen mind that was always in search of a line to make people laugh. He led a remarkable life that spanned 88 years with his wife Joan by his side for 56 years. Together they lived in Radnor Township for more than 50 years. He graduated from Temple University and received an LLB from Temple University Law School and an LLM in Taxation from the Georgetown University Law Center. Al served his country in the Army as legal counsel. Following that he worked as a Group Attorney with the Division of Corporate Finance, Securities Exchange Commission, Washington, D.C., as Investment Counsel with Fidelity Mutual Life Insurance Company, as Associate Counsel with American Medicorp Inc., as General Counsel of the Homes Group Division of Evans Products Company, a New York Stock Exchange Company, as a Senior Attorney of Atlantic Richfield Company, and as Deputy City Solicitor and Senior Attorney, City of Philadelphia. Al specialized in corporate, real estate and taxation law. Al had a deep faith and served on the Parish Counsel of St. John Newman Parish in Bryn Mawr, and also served as a Lector at St. John Newman Parish and St. Thomas of Villanova Parishes. He was known for his powerful baritone voice that made you sit up and listen to the word of God. He never forgot those less fortunate and was active in many charities and instituted “Turkeys For The Table” at several parishes to provide hundreds of holiday meals every year for the past 40 plus years. Following his retirement, Al became more active in his local community and at the age of 80, even ran for local office on the Republican ballot. He was a fixture at Villanova University basketball and football games which he loved. He was an active member of The Friendly Sons of Saint Patrick and never missed a family gathering or event for his grandchildren. He was deeply loved and admired and leaves a legacy of 4 children and 12 grandchildren; Kathryn married to Joseph Gallagher, A. Grant married to JoAnn Phelan, Robert married to Nancy Phelan and Barbara married to Brian Riley. His grandchildren include: Grant, Kathryn and Ryan Gallagher, Alexandra and Jackson Phelan, R. Greyson and Ashlyn Phelan and Madison, Paige, Jack, Hope and Finn Riley. We love you Pop! The viewing is scheduled for Monday, October 26 from 4 – 7 pm at D’Anjolell Funeral Home, 2811 West Chester Pike, Broomall and the funeral mass will be held on Tuesday, October 27 at 11 am at The Saint Thomas of Villanova Church, 800 East Lancaster Avenue, Villanova.
