Lawrence J. Mayer M.D.

December 8, 1942 - November 10, 2024

Larry was born in Palmerton, PA, the son of Lawrence and Marie. His early years were marked by academic and athletic excellence. He attended Lehigh University where he earned his Bachelor of Arts degree. While there he developed his passion for medicine and also showcased his athletic prowess as a point guard on the university’s basketball team, earning him the nickname “Ace”. From there he went to the University of Pennsylvania School of Medicine where he earned his Medical Degree and completed his general surgical residency in 1974. After his training he served two years as a major in the US Army, stationed at Fort Monmouth, NJ.

In 1976 he began his general surgical practice at Delaware County Memorial Hospital, Drexel Hill, PA, where he served with dedication and excellence for over four decades. His expertise and compassionate care earned him the respect and admiration of both his colleagues and patients. Larry was a fellow of the American College of Surgery.

Larry’s greatest joys in his life were his two children, Lauren and Matt. Beyond his family and career, Larry was also a man of many passions. He loved marathon running, hiking, and enjoying nature, finding peace in the great outdoors. Summers in Stone Harbor brought him happiness, and he could often be found there with a book in his hand, his golden retriever at his side, savoring the simple pleasures of life.

Larry is survived by his daughter, Lauren Sweetser and her husband Branden of Ardmore, PA, his son, Matthew Mayer of New York City, New York, and by his former wife, Doreene Mayer of Bryn Mawr, PA, who remained his dear friend and caregiver. He was a beloved father, friend, and mentor, known for his generosity, kindness, and unwavering dedication to those he cared for both personally and professionally.

In lieu of flowers, the family requests that donations be made to the Leukemia & Lymphoma Society, reflecting Larry’s lifelong dedication to helping others.

I was so sorry to learn of Larry's passing. A high school classmate and team mate. I remember fondly our time together in Palmerton. I consider Larry one of my classmates that challenged me both academically and athletically to be the very best I could be. May he rest in peach.

Such a great guy! Always willing to teach you something and never took it as a challenge when asking him questions. Always had a smile, never in a bad mood. He took my gallbladder out when I was 16 (he had a great bedside manner); who would have thought we would be colleagues 30 some years later (he swore he remembered me)! What a loss…

Larry was a dear, close friend for 49 years - all too brief given the richness of that relationship. We hiked and camped in Maine together, climbed Katahdin, shared lunches of mushrooms and dinners of lobster. The finality of his passing has hit me hard and I shall miss him. Mike LaCombe

I was a nurse in DCMH’s ER for over 20 years and I never saw him in a bad mood. He always had a smile and had a great sense of humor! His skill, dedication and skill were unsurpassed and he respected and admired the staff! So sad to hear this and my prayers for his loved ones!

So sorry to read this. I knew Larry for over 30 years at DCMH. Excellent surgeon and teacher. Great friend to nursing staff. Wonderful down to earth guy who I enjoyed working with and having as my Dr. Rest in peace.

though i was on the 11p to 7a shift for many years ,i took care of many of Dr.Mayer"s patients.he was always so kind and wanted the best for not just his patients but also for the nurses.He will be missed.

My condolences to the family. I worked with Dr. Mayer for over three decades at DCMH. He was one of the kindest surgeons with a wonderful bedside manner as well as his expertise and skill caring for others. He saw nurses as part of the team and always worked well with us. May he rest in peace and his family remember that he truly had a heart of giving for others. RIP

Dorene, this is Patty Madigan, I am so very sorry for your loss. I worked with Larry at DCMH and he was the Dr. who diagnosed my Mom’s breast cancer, he was so kind to her and supportive of me.
